How to Delete All Claude Chats (Bulk Delete Guide)

If you use Claude every day, your sidebar fills up fast: quick questions, half-finished drafts, test prompts, duplicates. Sooner or later you want to clear Claude chat history — and discover there is no “delete all” button. This guide covers how deletion actually works on claude.ai, why cleaning up manually is slow, and how to bulk delete Claude conversations when you have more than a handful.

How to delete Claude chats with the built-in tools

There are two built-in routes, and it is worth knowing both before reaching for anything else. The exact buttons shift as the interface evolves, but the flows stay the same.

One chat at a time

  1. Find the conversation in your sidebar (or open it).
  2. Open that chat’s options menu.
  3. Choose Delete and confirm.

Several at once, from the Chats page

Anthropic documents a multi-select: open Chats in the left sidebar, hover each conversation you want gone and tick the selection box that appears, then click Delete Selected.

Either way the chats disappear from your list. There is no trash folder and no undo, so make sure you won’t need those conversations again before confirming.

Why clearing a long history is still slow

The built-in multi-select solves the small case well. What it does not do — and Anthropic’s own help page describes no such control at the time of writing — is give you a select all, a search or filter to select by, or a way to leave a long run unattended. Every conversation still has to be found and ticked by hand, and the chat list loads older entries gradually as you scroll, so reaching the bottom of a long history takes time before you tick anything at all.

On a hundred-plus conversations that turns into a long stretch of scroll-hover-tick with nothing to help you decide what to keep. In practice most people give up partway through and the clutter keeps growing.

The faster way: select all, filter, then delete

Folders & Bulk Delete Chats for Claude is a Chrome extension (made by us, Sidewing) that adds the parts the built-in multi-select leaves out, directly on top of claude.ai:

How it deletes: the extension sends each delete request to claude.ai’s own API using your existing session — the same kind of request the site makes when you delete a chat yourself. Your conversation contents are never read or sent to our servers.

Add to Chrome — it’s free

Folders, pins, search, and single delete are free. Bulk delete is part of Pro ($19/year or $12 lifetime — launch price, regularly $39). Unofficial; not affiliated with Anthropic.

FAQ

Is there a built-in way to delete all Claude chats at once?

There is a built-in multi-select but not a delete-all. Anthropic documents opening Chats in the sidebar, hovering each conversation, ticking its selection box and clicking Delete Selected. At the time of writing there is no select-all, no filter to select by, and no “clear history” switch, so every conversation still has to be ticked by hand.

Are deleted Claude chats gone permanently?

Deleting a conversation removes it from your chat list, and claude.ai does not provide an undo or trash folder for deleted chats, so treat deletion as permanent from your side. For details on how Anthropic handles data retention after deletion, check Anthropic’s help center — retention policies can change and are outside any extension’s control.

Does deleting chats affect Claude’s memory or my Projects?

Deleting a conversation removes that conversation from your history. How deletion interacts with other Claude features such as memory or Projects is defined by Anthropic and may change over time, so we don’t make promises about it — check Anthropic’s help center for the current behavior before deleting chats you may depend on.

Is it safe to bulk delete Claude chats with an extension?

Folders & Bulk Delete Chats for Claude deletes only the chats you explicitly tick, by sending each delete request to claude.ai’s own API using your existing session. Batches are paced and cancellable mid-run. Your conversation contents are never read or sent to our servers. Deletion is still deletion, though: double-check your selection before you confirm.
