How to Organize Claude Chats into Folders
Claude’s sidebar is a single chronological list. That’s fine for your first twenty conversations — and unmanageable at two hundred. Work chats mix with quick questions, important threads sink below yesterday’s experiments, and finding last month’s research means scrolling and guessing. At the time of writing, claude.ai has no built-in folders for chats. Here’s what you can do about it, from manual workarounds to a proper Claude conversation manager.
Manual ways to keep Claude chats findable
1. Rename chats with consistent prefixes
Claude lets you rename a conversation from its options menu. A naming convention like “Work — pricing page copy” or “[Thesis] chapter 3 outline” acts as a poor man’s folder: related chats at least share a recognizable label. The downside is discipline — it only works if you rename every chat at creation, and the list itself is still flat.
2. Use Projects for ongoing work
Claude’s Projects group conversations around shared context and knowledge, and they’re genuinely useful for a long-running effort like a codebase or a book. But Projects are a workspace, not a filing cabinet: they’re built around adding context to new work, not around sorting the hundreds of miscellaneous chats already sitting in your history. Many day-to-day conversations never belong to any project.
3. Bookmark the chats you return to
Each conversation has its own URL, so you can keep browser bookmarks to the handful of chats you reopen often. It works, but it lives outside Claude, goes stale as chats accumulate, and doesn’t help you search or triage the rest of the list.

Does Claude AI have built-in folders for chats?
At the time of writing, claude.ai has no folder feature for the chat sidebar — your conversations live in one flat, chronological list. Claude offers Projects, which group new work around shared context, but they are not a general filing system for your existing chat history. It is never sent to Sidewing’s servers, and the extension never reads or transmits the contents of your conversations — only chat titles and IDs, to list and organize them.
What happens to my folders if I uninstall the extension?
Folders and pins are an organizational layer added by the extension, so they disappear if you remove it — but your actual Claude conversations are untouched and remain in your claude.ai account exactly as before. The extension never modifies a chat unless you explicitly ask it to delete that chat.
