Claude.ai Slow With Too Many Chats? What Actually Helps

Two different problems get filed under “Claude is laggy”. Only one of them is fixed by cleaning up your history.

If you use Claude every day, sooner or later something starts to drag. The sidebar takes a beat to fill in. Finding a conversation from last month means scrolling and squinting. Or the chat you’ve had open since morning starts feeling heavier than a fresh one. These get reported as one complaint — “claude.ai is slow with too many chats” — but they are two separate problems with two separate answers.

First, work out which one you have

Open a brand-new chat and type something short. Then go back to the thread that felt slow.

• The new chat feels fine, the old one doesn’t → the problem is inside that one conversation. Cleaning your history will not touch it.
• Everything feels fine, but you can’t find anything → the problem is the chat list. This is the one where cleanup and organization genuinely help.

Problem one: a single long conversation

A conversation you’ve been adding to all day is not the same object as a fresh one — it carries everything said so far, and it keeps carrying it with every new message. We can’t tell you what claude.ai does under the hood, and we won’t invent a reason; for the platform’s own account of how long conversations behave, see Anthropic’s help center.

What matters practically is that the weight travels with that thread. Deleting a hundred unrelated chats from your sidebar changes nothing about it. What does help:

• Start a new chat and carry over only what you need — a short summary of where you got to, plus the specific text or code you’re still working on. This is the single most effective thing you can do, and it costs a paste.
• Split by topic, not by session. One long thread that drifted through four unrelated tasks is four conversations that should have been separate.
• Don’t reach for history cleanup here. It’s the wrong tool for this symptom, and deletion on claude.ai is permanent — there is no undo and no trash folder.

Problem two: a chat list that’s become unusable

This is the one most people actually mean. The sidebar is an endless flat feed with no folders. It loads older conversations gradually as you scroll, so with several hundred chats just getting to the bottom of your history takes a while. Titles are auto-generated and often near-identical, so scanning doesn’t narrow much. Half the list is dead weight: one-line questions, test prompts, abandoned drafts, duplicates.

Being honest about this one: a shorter list reliably fixes the human part — finding things, and not scrolling past four hundred rows to reach March. Whether it also makes the interface itself measurably faster is up to the platform, and we’re not going to promise you a speed-up we can’t verify.

Rule out your browser before blaming Claude

Cheap checks, in the order worth doing them:

1. Close duplicate claude.ai tabs. Each open tab is a full running copy of the app. Three of them left open since yesterday is a common and easily-missed cause.
2. Reload the tab, or restart the browser after a long session.
3. Test with your other extensions disabled. Plenty of extensions inject code into every page you visit; a single misbehaving one can make any site feel heavy.
4. Try a different browser. If claude.ai is fine there, the problem is on your side, not the platform’s.

Trimming the list with what Claude gives you

At the time of writing, claude.ai has no folders. It does have a built-in multi-select on the Chats page — hover a conversation, tick its box, click Delete Selected — but no select-all, no filter to select by, and no “delete all” switch. Worth doing regardless of which tools you use:

• Delete the obvious throwaways first — one-line questions and test prompts are usually a third of the list.
• Keep meaningful titles on the conversations you intend to come back to, so search has something to match.

Why does claude.ai feel slow when I have hundreds of chats?

Two different things get reported as the same complaint. One is a single long conversation that has grown over hours of back-and-forth — that thread carries its whole history with it, and the weight stays with that conversation. The other is the chat list itself: the sidebar loads older conversations gradually as you scroll, so with a long history it takes time to fill and it is hard to find anything. Only the second one is affected by cleaning up your history.

Does deleting Claude chats make the interface faster?

It reliably makes the list shorter and easier to navigate, which is usually what people actually want. Whether a shorter list also makes claude.ai measurably faster is up to the platform, and we do not promise a speed-up. Treat deletion as decluttering, not as a performance fix — and remember it is permanent, since claude.ai offers no undo or trash folder for deleted chats.

Why is one long conversation still slow after I clean up my chat list?

Because the two problems are unrelated. Deleting other conversations changes what is in your sidebar; it changes nothing inside a thread you have been adding to all day. The fix for a heavy conversation is to start a new one and carry over only what matters — a short summary, or the specific text you still need.
