How to Delete Files and Images from Claude Chats

You dragged a PDF into Claude and it was the wrong version, or pasted a screenshot with a client name in the corner. The obvious next move is to delete that one file from the conversation — and that is where people get stuck, because the answer changes depending on when you ask. This guide separates the cases honestly: before sending, after sending, files that live in a Project, and the point where deleting the whole conversation is the only real option.

Case 1: you have not sent the message yet

This is the easy case. Until you hit send, an attachment is just queued in the composer — it is not part of the conversation. Anthropic documents several ways to put it there: the + button in the lower left of the chat box → Add files or photos, drag and drop straight into the chat window, or pasting an image from your clipboard (Upload files to Claude).

What that help page does not document is the reverse operation. At the time of writing, queued attachments appear as chips above the input box and you drop one with the small remove control on the chip — but since Anthropic does not describe that control, treat it as current UI behaviour, not a guarantee. If you cannot find it, the bulletproof fallback is to reload the page before sending.

Case 2: the message is already sent

Here the honest answer is uncomfortable: at the time of writing, Anthropic's help center documents how to attach files but describes no control that removes a single file from a message you have already sent. The closest thing people reach for is editing the message. Anthropic does document that you can “edit prior chat messages to create a different version of the conversation” and “switch between different versions using the version selector” (Anthropic help center). That is the crux of this guide: editing branches the conversation, it does not overwrite it. The original version — the one holding your attachment — is still there behind the version selector. Editing or retrying gives you a cleaner branch to work in; it is not a deletion mechanism.

Rule of thumb: if you attached something you genuinely need gone, do not rely on edit or retry — go to the last resort below.

Case 3: the file lives in a Project, not a chat

Projects are a separate storage layer. Anthropic describes uploading “relevant documents, text, code, or other files to a project's knowledge base” (What are projects?), and their upload article makes the same split: files go either to individual chats or to a project's Files section “for persistent reference across conversations”.

The consequence: deleting a chat inside a project does not touch the project's knowledge. If the file you want gone was uploaded to the project, remove it in the project itself. Anthropic's project management article (How can I create and manage projects?) covers adding content with the + button but, at the time of writing, gives no written steps for removal — so work from what the knowledge panel offers.

Case 4 (the last resort): delete the whole conversation

When an attachment cannot be pulled out on its own, the only complete answer is removing the conversation holding it. Anthropic's documented steps: open the chat, click its name at the top of the screen, choose Delete. For several at once, click Chats in the left sidebar, hover over the conversations, tick the selection box that appears, and use Delete Selected (How can I delete or rename a conversation?). There is no trash folder and no undo, so be sure before you confirm.

What does deletion cover? Anthropic's Compliance API documentation — the Enterprise-only interface, not the normal claude.ai UI — states that the chat delete endpoint “also removes the chat's messages and any files attached to those messages” (Retrieve and delete chats, files, and projects). The same page distinguishes a chat soft-deleted in claude.ai from a hard delete — a good reminder that “gone from your sidebar” and “gone from Anthropic's systems” run on two different clocks.

If you have dozens of old chats full of attachments you would rather not keep, see our companion guide on deleting all Claude chats and, for the ones you keep, organizing Claude chats into folders.

Add to Chrome — it’s free

Straight answer: our extension does not remove individual files or images from messages. It works one level up, on conversations: folders, pins, title search and single delete are free; ticking many chats and deleting them in one batch is Pro ($19/year or $12 lifetime — launch price, regularly $39). Unofficial; not affiliated with Anthropic.

What it touches: the extension asks for the storage permission only, runs on claude.ai, and never reads or sends your conversation contents to our servers. Bulk delete works on any chat listed in the panel, including ones that have scrolled out of view, and the batch is paced and cancellable mid-run.

Deleting in the UI is about your account, not about retention

Removing something from your chat list answers “is this still in front of me?” It does not answer “does Anthropic still hold a copy?” That is their policy, and no browser extension has visibility into it. Their own statement is the one to rely on: conversations you delete “will be immediately deleted from your conversation history” and “automatically deleted from our back-end within 30 days” (Can you delete data sent via Claude?). They also note exceptions — data may be kept longer where required to enforce their policies or by law. If your reason for removing a file is compliance rather than tidiness, read that page yourself: policies change, and this guide is a snapshot, not legal advice.

FAQ

How do I delete files from a Claude chat?

It depends on whether you have sent the message yet. Before you send, the attachment is still sitting in the composer and you can drop it there — or reload the page, since nothing is attached to the conversation until the message goes out. After you send, Anthropic’s help center documents how to upload files but documents no control that removes one file from a sent message, so treat it as part of that conversation. Files added to a Project’s knowledge are separate and managed in the project itself. Otherwise the remaining option is deleting the whole conversation.

How do I remove images from a Claude chat?

Images behave exactly like other attachments. Anthropic documents adding them by drag and drop, through the plus button, or by pasting from the clipboard, and the same asymmetry applies: there is guidance for adding an image and none for taking a sent one back out. Before sending, remove it from the composer. After sending, the practical option is to delete the conversation that contains it.

Does deleting a Claude chat also delete the files attached to it?

Anthropic’s Compliance API documentation — the Enterprise-only interface, not the normal claude.ai UI — states that deleting a chat also removes the chat’s messages and any files attached to those messages. On a regular account, what you can verify yourself is that the conversation and its attachments stop appearing in your history. Backend retention is Anthropic’s, not ours: their privacy center says deleted conversations leave your history immediately and the backend within 30 days.

Can the Folders & Bulk Delete Chats for Claude extension delete individual files or images?

No. The extension works at the level of conversations, not message contents: folders, pins, title search, single delete, and bulk delete of the chats you tick. It cannot reach inside a message and strip one attachment, because claude.ai exposes no such action. It helps with the last resort in this guide — clearing out conversations that hold files you no longer want — and nothing beyond that.
